Be Careful If You Notice Red Marks on Toilet Paper in a Public Restroom

  • by

Public restrooms are used by many people every day, so maintaining good hygiene is essential. If you notice unusual red marks on toilet paper in a public restroom, you may wonder what they are and whether they pose a health risk.

Although an unusual stain can look alarming, red marks do not automatically indicate blood or a serious danger. They may come from ink, dyes, cleaning products, cosmetics, or other substances. However, it is sensible to avoid touching unidentified stains directly.

What Should You Do If You See Red Marks?

1. Avoid touching the stained area.
If toilet paper has unexplained red marks, choose another clean roll or use a different dispenser if one is available. Avoid touching the stain with your bare hands.

2. Check the surrounding area.
Look for other signs of contamination, such as unusual discoloration, wet surfaces, or damaged dispensers. Do not attempt to investigate by touching or smelling the substance.

3. Wash your hands thoroughly.
After using a public restroom, wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds. This is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of germs.

4. Avoid unnecessary panic.
A red stain alone cannot tell you whether a substance is infectious, toxic, or harmless. There is no reliable way to identify an unknown substance by its color alone.

5. Report a suspicious situation.
If the toilet paper appears deliberately contaminated or the dispenser is visibly dirty, notify the restroom attendant or facility manager so the area can be checked and cleaned safely.
