Blood Sugar From 286 to 98 in 15 Minutes: What the Claim Really Means

A blood glucose reading of 286 mg/dL is significantly elevated, so it is understandable that someone might be interested in anything claiming to bring it back to a normal range quickly. However, the claim that three inexpensive minerals can reduce blood sugar from 286 to 98 mg/dL in just 15 minutes is not supported by reliable medical evidence.

Minerals such as magnesium, zinc, and chromium are important nutrients involved in normal metabolism and glucose regulation. They can be obtained through foods such as nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, meat, seafood, and vegetables. However, taking these minerals does not provide a proven way to produce an immediate 99.99% reduction in blood glucose.

A major drop from 286 mg/dL to 98 mg/dL in such a short period would also need to be interpreted carefully. Glucose meters can produce readings affected by factors such as contaminated fingers, testing technique, expired or improperly stored strips, and normal measurement variation. If a reading seems unexpectedly different from another, washing and drying the hands before repeating the test can sometimes help verify the result.

More importantly, a high glucose reading should not be treated by experimenting with large doses of minerals or supplements. Excessive amounts of certain minerals can cause serious problems. For example, too much magnesium from supplements can cause diarrhea and, at very high levels, dangerous complications. Excess zinc can interfere with copper absorption and cause other problems.

Chromium supplements are also sometimes marketed for blood sugar control, but they should not be considered a replacement for established diabetes treatment.

If someone repeatedly has glucose readings around 286 mg/dL, they should discuss those results with a healthcare professional. The appropriate response depends on whether the person has diabetes, what medications they take, whether they have eaten recently, and whether they are experiencing symptoms.
