Parents, I Need Some Real Advice About My 13-Year-Old’s Room

  • by

Parents, I genuinely need some advice here.

This is what my 13-year-old’s bedroom looks like every single day.

Dirty clothes on the floor.

Trash scattered everywhere.

Books, papers, and random objects piled up.

And somehow, even clean laundry that I’ve just washed and folded ends up thrown on the floor as if it means absolutely nothing.

I’ve reached the point where I’m exhausted from constantly cleaning up after him.

But at the same time, I can’t simply walk past this every day and pretend it’s okay.

I’ve Tried Cleaning It Myself

I’ve picked up the clothes.

I’ve collected the garbage.

I’ve organized his belongings.

I’ve washed and folded laundry.

And then, somehow, a short time later, we’re right back where we started.

It’s incredibly frustrating to spend time making the room clean only to find it looking exactly like this again.

That’s when I realized something:

If I keep cleaning it for him, am I actually teaching him anything?

Or am I simply making it easier for him to continue the same behavior?

But He’s Only 13

This is where I’m struggling.

He’s still a kid.

I don’t expect his room to look like a hotel room.

I don’t expect perfectly folded clothes and perfectly organized shelves.

Teenagers are messy.

I understand that.

But there is a difference between a messy bedroom and a room where trash, dirty clothes, and belongings are covering almost every available surface.

At some point, he needs to learn that living in a shared home comes with responsibilities.

So Do I Hold the Line?
