How to Clean Your Toilet Flush Tank and Make It Look Like New

  • by

Over time, the inside of a toilet tank can become surprisingly dirty. Mineral deposits, rust-colored stains, sediment, algae, and grime can collect around the tank walls and flushing mechanism. Even when the toilet bowl looks clean, the inside of the tank may look very different.

The good news is that cleaning the toilet tank is a simple household maintenance task. With the right method, you can remove much of the buildup without damaging the flushing components.

Before you begin, gather a few basic supplies: rubber gloves, an old sponge or soft cloth, a soft toothbrush, a bucket or container, mild dish soap, and white vinegar if mineral deposits are present. Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.

Start by removing the lid from the toilet tank carefully and placing it somewhere safe. Toilet tank lids can be heavy and fragile, so don’t place them somewhere where they could easily fall.

Next, turn off the water supply. The shutoff valve is normally located on the wall or floor near the toilet. Turn it clockwise until the water stops.

Flush the toilet once to empty most of the water from the tank. If there is still a significant amount of water remaining, you can remove it with a small container or sponge.

With the tank mostly empty, inspect the inside carefully. The brown or reddish discoloration shown in the image can be caused by mineral deposits, rust, sediment, or other buildup in the water supply.

For ordinary dirt and grime, add a small amount of mild dish soap to warm water. Dip a soft sponge into the solution and gently wipe the inside walls of the tank.

Pay attention to the corners and areas around the flushing mechanism, but don’t pull, bend, or disconnect components unnecessarily.
