My mother-in-law showed up at my restaurant with 38 friends and announced, “Order the most expensive things. I’m treating everyone today

PART 2 — THE BILL

The dinner continued for another two hours.

By then, the private dining room looked like the aftermath of a wedding.

Empty wine bottles covered the tables.

Plates that had cost more than some people’s weekly groceries were stacked everywhere.

The women were laughing, taking photographs, and ordering desserts.

Beatrice was having the time of her life.

At one point she called me over.

“Camilla, darling, another bottle for table six.”

I looked at her.

“Of course.”

She smiled.

She still believed she was in control.

She didn’t know that Gavin had been quietly recording every item ordered under her name.

At 4:37 p.m., the last dessert was served.

Gavin walked into the kitchen.

“Camilla, it’s done.”

“How much?”

He handed me the receipt.

I looked at the total.

$23,289.64.

I nodded.

“Perfect.”

Gavin stared at me.

“Are you sure about this?”

“Yes.”

I picked up a black folder from beneath my desk.

Inside were bank statements, invoices, photographs, messages, and copies of documents.

Everything I had spent the last three months collecting.

I walked into the private dining room.

Beatrice was sitting at the center of the table, surrounded by her friends.

She raised her glass when she saw me.

“There she is! Our wonderful chef!”

Everyone applauded.

I smiled.

“Beatrice, I’m glad you enjoyed your afternoon.”

“Absolutely wonderful.”

She waved toward the empty plates.

“Put everything on the family account.”

I placed the folder on the table.

“Certainly.”

She opened her mouth to say something.

Then she saw the invoice.

Her smile disappeared.

“What is this?”

“Your bill.”

She stared at the number.

“Twenty-three thousand dollars?”

“Yes.”

She laughed nervously.

“Oh, Camilla. Don’t be ridiculous. You know I’m family.”

“I know.”

“And family doesn’t charge family.”

“That’s true.”

I opened the folder.

“Which is why I haven’t charged you for the previous meals.”

Her face changed.

I placed another document in front of her.

“And that’s exactly why we’re going to settle everything today.”

One of her friends leaned forward.

“Settle what?”

I turned the document around.

It was a list of every unpaid meal Beatrice had taken from my restaurant over the previous three years.

The total was $41,782.16.

The room became completely silent.

Beatrice stared at the number.

“You’ve been keeping track?”

“I own the restaurant.”

She looked around.

“Lucas owns this restaurant.”

I smiled.

“No.”

I placed another document on the table.

“The company registration does.”

She picked it up.

Her hands began trembling.

The restaurant belonged entirely to my corporation.

And my corporation belonged entirely to me.

Lucas had never been an owner.

He had never invested a dollar.

He wasn’t even an authorized signatory on the business account.

Beatrice looked at me.

“That’s not possible.”

“It is.”

Then I pulled out the bank statements.

“There’s something else.”

I slid them across the table.

“These are transfers from the restaurant account.”

Her eyes moved down the page.

Hotels.

Jewelry.

Luxury dinners.

Payments to a woman named Sophie.

Beatrice stopped breathing for a moment.

One of her friends whispered:

“Isn’t Sophie that young woman Lucas has been seeing?”

Beatrice looked at me.

I nodded.

“Yes.”

Her face went pale.

“And the money?”

“Restaurant money.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Beatrice suddenly stood.

“You have no right to accuse my son!”

I calmly opened the next document.

“I wasn’t accusing him.”

I pointed to the signature.

“He signed.”

She stared at it.

It was Lucas’s signature.

Every transfer had been authorized using credentials connected to his access.

“He told me you gave him permission!”

I shook my head.

“I didn’t.”

Beatrice looked around the room.

For the first time that afternoon, none of her friends were laughing.

PART 3 — THE CALL

Beatrice grabbed her phone.

She called Lucas.

He answered almost immediately.

“Mom?”

“You need to come here.”

“What happened?”

“Your wife knows.”

There was a long silence.

Then Lucas said:

“What does she know?”

Beatrice looked at me.

“Everything.”

I heard his voice change.

“Don’t let her touch the accounts.”

I almost laughed.

“The accounts are already frozen.”

Silence.

Lucas finally asked:

“Who froze them?”

“I did.”

He hung up.

Beatrice stared at her phone.

“You’ve destroyed my son.”

I looked directly at her.

“No, Beatrice.”

I pushed the folder toward her.

“Your son destroyed himself.”

Then I added quietly:

“And you helped him.”

She sat back down.

Her hands were shaking.

One of her friends asked:

“Beatrice, did you really know about the affair?”

Beatrice didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.
