Baking Soda for Wrinkles and Dark Spots: Does It Really Work?

Social media is full of posts claiming that a simple baking soda cream can erase wrinkles, dark spots, and under-eye circles overnight. While baking soda is a common household ingredient, there is no scientific evidence that it can remove wrinkles or permanently fade dark spots. In fact, using baking soda directly on your face may do more harm than good.

Here’s what you should know before trying this popular DIY skincare trend.

Can Baking Soda Improve Your Skin?

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is naturally alkaline, with a pH of about 8–9, while healthy skin has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5–5.5.

Applying baking soda too often can:

  • Disrupt your skin’s protective barrier.
  • Cause dryness and irritation.
  • Increase redness and sensitivity.
  • Potentially worsen acne or eczema in some people.

Although it may temporarily make the skin feel smoother by gently removing surface dead skin cells, it does not work like an anti-aging treatment.

If You Still Want to Try It

If your skin is not sensitive and you wish to experiment, use it only occasionally and with caution.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons plain yogurt or aloe vera gel
  • 1 teaspoon honey (optional)

Step 1: Mix the Ingredients

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl until you have a smooth, creamy paste.

Step 2: Perform a Patch Test

Before applying it to your face, test a small amount on the inside of your wrist or behind your ear.

Wait 24 hours.

If irritation occurs, do not use it.

Step 3: Apply Gently

Spread a thin layer over clean skin.

Avoid the eye area, lips, and any cuts or irritated skin.

Step 4: Leave It On Briefly

Leave the mixture on for no more than 5 minutes.

Do not leave it on overnight.

Step 5: Rinse and Moisturize

Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

Pat your skin dry and apply a gentle moisturizer.

Use this treatment no more than once every 1–2 weeks if your skin tolerates it.

What About Wrinkles and Dark Spots?

While this mixture may leave your skin feeling temporarily smoother, it is unlikely to reduce wrinkles or significantly fade pigmentation. Improvement in skin texture is usually temporary and comes from mild exfoliation rather than true skin repair.

Better Ways to Improve Skin

For healthier-looking skin over time, dermatologists recommend:

  • Applying sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every day.
  • Using a moisturizer suited to your skin type.
  • Incorporating ingredients such as retinolvitamin Cniacinamide, or azelaic acid if appropriate.
  • Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.
  • Drinking enough water and getting adequate sleep.
  • Avoiding smoking and excessive sun exposure.

Final Thoughts

Baking soda is not a proven remedy for wrinkles, dark spots, or dark circles. While an occasional, diluted application may provide mild exfoliation for some people, frequent use or leaving it on overnight can damage the skin’s natural barrier and cause irritation. If your goal is smoother, brighter, and healthier skin, a consistent skincare routine with evidence-based ingredients is a much safer and more effective approach.
