Cataracts become increasingly common with age and can gradually make vision cloudy, blurry, or less bright. This is why dramatic claims about a drink that can “clear the lens in three nights” can sound appealing.
However, there is no proven drink, plant, or home remedy that can dissolve or completely reverse an established cataract in three nights. Cataracts involve clouding of the eye’s natural lens, and when they significantly interfere with daily activities, cataract surgery is the established treatment.
That does not mean nutrition is unimportant. A healthy diet can provide nutrients that support overall eye health, and carrots can certainly be part of that diet.
A Simple Carrot and Orange Drink
If you enjoy vegetable and fruit drinks, here is a nutritious recipe. It should be considered a food—not a cataract treatment.
Ingredients
- 2 medium carrots
- 1 orange
- ½ cup water
- A small piece of fresh ginger, optional
- A squeeze of lemon, optional
Step 1: Wash the Carrots
Wash the carrots thoroughly under running water.
Peel them if desired, then cut them into small pieces.
Step 2: Prepare the Orange
Peel the orange and separate it into segments.
Remove any seeds.
Step 3: Add the Ingredients
Place the carrots, orange segments, water, and optional ginger into a blender.
Step 4: Blend
Blend everything until smooth.
If the mixture is too thick, gradually add a little more water.
Step 5: Serve
Pour the drink into a glass and enjoy it fresh.
For greater fiber, you can keep the pulp rather than straining it.
Why Are Carrots Associated With Eye Health?
Carrots contain beta-carotene, which the body can convert into vitamin A. Vitamin A is important for normal vision and eye function.
But an important distinction is necessary: vitamin A supports normal eye function; it does not remove an existing cataract.
You can also obtain eye-supportive nutrients from foods such as leafy green vegetables, eggs, sweet potatoes, peppers, citrus fruits, nuts, and fish.
What Actually Happens With a Cataract?
A cataract develops when proteins and structures within the eye’s natural lens become cloudy. Vision may gradually become:
- Blurry or hazy
- Less colorful
- More sensitive to bright lights
- Affected by glare or halos
- More difficult at night
- Harder for reading or driving
The progression varies from person to person.
A healthy diet may support general eye health, but once a cataract is causing significant visual problems, drinking a particular juice cannot restore the lens to its original transparency.
When Should You See an Eye Doctor?
If you notice progressively cloudy vision, difficulty reading, worsening night vision, or increased glare, schedule an eye examination.
An eye professional can determine whether a cataract is present and whether another eye condition could be contributing to the symptoms.
If a cataract becomes severe enough to interfere with everyday activities, cataract surgery can remove the cloudy natural lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens.
Don’t Put Homemade Remedies in Your Eyes
This is especially important.
A homemade carrot, plant, lemon, honey, or herbal preparation should not be placed directly into the eyes. Non-sterile substances can cause irritation, infection, or injury.
A drink is very different from an eye drop.
The Bottom Line
Carrots are nutritious and can be included in a healthy diet, but there is no credible evidence that a carrot drink or another “miracle plant” can clear cataracts in three nights or eliminate the need for cataract surgery.
If your vision has become cloudy after 65, don’t wait for a social-media remedy to restore it. A proper eye examination can determine the cause and help you choose an appropriate treatment.
