An enlarged prostate, medically known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is extremely common as men get older. It can cause frustrating urinary symptoms, including frequent trips to the bathroom, difficulty starting urination, a weak or interrupted stream, dribbling, and the feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied.
Claims online that a capsule, drink, or natural remedy can “shrink the prostate back to normal size in 45 minutes” and completely eliminate swelling are not supported by reliable medical evidence. BPH does not ordinarily disappear within minutes, and dramatic before-and-after illustrations used in social media advertisements should not be considered proof that a treatment works.
The good news is that BPH can be managed effectively, and treatment depends on the severity of symptoms, prostate size, overall health, and other factors.
For men with mild symptoms, a doctor may initially recommend lifestyle adjustments and monitoring. Reducing fluids before bedtime, limiting caffeine and alcohol, avoiding medications that can worsen urinary symptoms when medically appropriate, and taking time to empty the bladder completely may help some men manage everyday symptoms.
