Grape Seeds Are Far More Valuable Than Most People Realize

  • by

When people eat grapes, the juicy fruit usually gets all the attention while the tiny seeds are discarded without a second thought. Yet grape seeds contain naturally occurring plant compounds that have made them an interesting ingredient in nutrition, traditional food practices, and modern wellness products.

Grape seeds contain polyphenols, including compounds known as proanthocyanidins. These substances have antioxidant properties, which is one reason grape-seed extracts have attracted so much scientific and nutritional interest.

Instead of throwing grape seeds away, there are several ways to make use of them. One simple option is to collect seeds from fresh grapes, rinse them thoroughly, and allow them to dry completely. Once dry, they can be ground into a fine powder using a suitable grinder.

The powder should be used as a food ingredient in small amounts rather than consumed in large quantities. It can be incorporated into smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or homemade baked goods. Because grape-seed powder can have a slightly bitter and earthy flavor, combining it with naturally sweet foods can make it more pleasant.

Another option is grape-seed extract, which is available commercially in standardized forms. Unlike homemade ground seeds, commercial extracts can contain concentrated amounts of specific compounds, so they should be used according to the product directions.

Grape seeds are particularly interesting because of their antioxidant content. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress, but this does not mean that grape seeds can cure diseases or replace a healthy diet, prescription medication, or medical treatment.

Grape-seed products are sometimes promoted for cardiovascular health, healthy circulation, blood pressure, skin health, and other conditions. While research has explored some of these potential effects, evidence varies depending on the specific preparation and health outcome. It is therefore better to view grape seeds as one possible source of plant compounds rather than a miracle remedy.

If you want to make grape-seed powder at home, begin with clean, ripe grapes. Remove the seeds carefully while eating or processing the fruit, rinse them thoroughly, and spread them in a single layer to dry completely. They must be completely dry before grinding and storing.

Once dry, grind only a small quantity at a time. Store the powder in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place and discard it if it develops an unusual smell, moisture, or signs of mold.

People taking medications, particularly medicines that affect blood clotting or blood pressure, should consult a healthcare professional before using concentrated grape-seed supplements. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also seek professional advice before using concentrated herbal or botanical supplements.

The next time you enjoy a bunch of grapes, remember that the tiny seeds are more than something to spit out. They contain interesting naturally occurring compounds and can be explored as part of a varied diet—provided they are prepared properly and used sensibly.
