Garlic is a flavorful ingredient that has been used in traditional cooking for centuries. Drinking garlic-infused water can be a simple way to incorporate its flavor into your daily routine, although it should not be considered a “detox” or a treatment for digestive problems.
Ingredients
- 1 fresh garlic clove
- 1 glass (about 250 ml) of water
- A small squeeze of lemon, optional
- A little honey, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Garlic
Peel one fresh garlic clove and rinse it thoroughly. Lightly crush it with the side of a knife to release its natural compounds.
Step 2: Add the Water
Place the crushed garlic into a glass or cup and add approximately 250 ml of room-temperature or warm water.
Step 3: Let It Infuse
Allow the garlic to sit in the water for about 5–10 minutes. This gives the water time to take on some of the garlic’s flavor.
Step 4: Adjust the Flavor
If you find the taste too strong, add a small squeeze of lemon or a little honey. These additions are optional.
Step 5: Drink It
Drink the preparation fresh. Start with a small amount if you are not accustomed to raw garlic, since it can cause heartburn, stomach discomfort, gas, or bloating in some people.
What Garlic Water Can—and Cannot—Do
Garlic contains compounds such as allicin, which have been studied for various potential health effects. However, drinking garlic water for three days has not been shown to transform the body, remove intestinal “toxins,” or dramatically change the appearance of internal organs.
A healthy digestive system already has natural mechanisms for processing waste. Garlic can simply be part of a balanced diet alongside vegetables, fruits, whole grains, adequate hydration, and regular physical activity.
If you take blood-thinning medication or have a condition affected by garlic intake, discuss regular or concentrated garlic consumption with your healthcare professional.
Simple, natural, and easy to prepare—but best enjoyed as a food-based wellness drink rather than a miracle cure.
