The Seed That May Help Support Muscle Health After 75

  • by

As we age, maintaining muscle strength becomes increasingly important. Losing muscle gradually can make everyday activities such as climbing stairs, carrying groceries, getting out of a chair, or walking longer distances more difficult. The good news is that nutrition and regular strength exercises can help older adults maintain and build muscle.

One seed that deserves attention is hemp seed. Hemp seeds provide plant-based protein along with healthy fats, fiber, and other nutrients. They can be an easy addition to breakfast, smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, and salads.

However, the claim that any seed builds muscle “1,000,000 times better than eggs” is not realistic. Eggs are also a high-quality protein source, and muscle growth depends on the overall amount and quality of protein consumed, regular resistance exercise, adequate calories, and recovery.

A simple way to add hemp seeds to your daily diet is through a protein-rich breakfast smoothie. Start with one cup of milk or unsweetened soy milk, half a banana, three tablespoons of hemp hearts, half a cup of plain Greek yogurt, and a small handful of oats. Add a few ice cubes and blend until smooth.

For an additional calorie boost, especially for older adults who struggle to maintain their weight, one tablespoon of natural peanut butter can be added to the smoothie.

Another easy option is a protein-rich oatmeal bowl. Prepare a serving of oatmeal with milk, then add two to three tablespoons of hemp hearts, sliced banana, berries, and a spoonful of Greek yogurt. This creates a filling breakfast containing protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats, and other nutrients.

Hemp seeds can also be sprinkled over salads, soups, vegetables, cottage cheese, or yogurt. Their mild nutty flavor makes them easy to incorporate into meals without requiring complicated recipes.

The key to rebuilding or maintaining muscle isn’t simply eating one special food. Older adults generally benefit from spreading protein-containing foods throughout the day rather than consuming almost all of their protein in one meal. Foods such as eggs, fish, poultry, dairy products, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds, and lean meats can all contribute to daily protein intake.

Resistance exercise is equally important. Simple exercises such as chair stands, wall push-ups, resistance-band exercises, and appropriately supervised weight training can provide the stimulus muscles need to become stronger. Someone who has been inactive should start gradually and choose exercises appropriate for their physical abilities.

Hydration and adequate overall nutrition matter too. If someone isn’t eating enough calories, simply increasing protein may not solve the problem. A balanced eating pattern can provide the energy and nutrients needed to support physical activity and recovery.

If an older adult is losing muscle rapidly, becoming noticeably weaker, losing weight without trying, or having difficulty with normal daily activities, it is important to speak with a healthcare professional. Unintentional muscle loss can sometimes be associated with inadequate nutrition, medication effects, illness, or other underlying problems.

Hemp seeds can be a convenient source of plant-based protein, but they aren’t a miracle food and they don’t outperform eggs by an enormous multiple. The most effective approach to maintaining muscle after 75 is adequate protein, enough food, regular resistance exercise, good sleep, and consistency.

A simple hemp-seed smoothie can be one tasty part of that routine—and unlike exaggerated viral claims, the real results come from doing the basics regularly.
