Here’s a quick visual challenge that looks simple at first—but the overlapping pears make it surprisingly easy to lose count.
Take a few seconds before looking for the answer. How many pears can you see in the bowl: 14 or 15?
The pears overlap one another, and several are partially hidden behind the ones in front. That makes this a great little attention and observation test.
How to Count Them
Start from the back and work your way toward the front.
Step 1: Count the Back Row
Look at the pears closest to the wooden background.
Count each visible pear separately, even when another pear partially covers its lower half.
Step 2: Move to the Middle
Next, follow the row immediately in front.
Pay particular attention to the stems. A visible stem can help you distinguish one pear from another when their bodies overlap.
Step 3: Count the Front Row
Finally, count the pears closest to the front edge of the bowl.
These are generally easier to identify because more of each pear is visible.
Step 4: Add Everything Together
Once you’ve counted each layer, add the numbers rather than counting randomly from left to right. This reduces the chance of accidentally counting the same pear twice.
The Answer
There are 15 pears. 🍐🍐🍐
If you counted 14, don’t worry—you were very close! The overlapping arrangement makes one of the partially hidden pears particularly easy to miss.
Why Are These Tests So Tricky?
Your brain doesn’t process every object in an image independently. When objects overlap, it has to determine where one object ends and another begins.
Several things can make the challenge harder:
- Objects partially covering each other
- Similar colors and shapes
- Multiple rows
- Limited visibility of some objects
- Trying to count too quickly
That’s why slowing down and counting systematically often produces a better result.
Try It Again
Look at the picture one more time and try counting from back to front, using the stems and visible outlines as clues.
Then cover the image and see whether you can remember the final number.
Did you get 15 on your first try? 🍐
Share this attention test with someone and see if they can beat your count!
