Brown spots can become more noticeable with age, especially on areas that receive regular sun exposure. They may appear as small flat patches on the cheeks, forehead, hands, or other exposed areas. Because they can be frustrating to treat, home remedies such as baking soda are often promoted online as quick solutions.
You may have seen claims that baking soda can “strip away” brown spots in 90 seconds or work “1,000 times better than Botox.” Those claims are misleading. Baking soda has not been shown to safely erase age spots in 90 seconds, and Botox does not treat pigmentation in the first place.
In fact, rubbing baking soda onto facial skin can cause dryness, irritation, burning, or damage to the skin barrier. Irritation may even make discoloration look worse.
If you want to improve the appearance of brown spots at home, a gentle routine is a much safer approach.
Step 1: Cleanse the Skin Gently
Start with a mild, fragrance-free facial cleanser.
Wet your face with lukewarm water and gently massage the cleanser over the skin using your fingertips. Avoid scrubbing the brown spots aggressively.
Rinse thoroughly and pat your face dry with a clean towel.
Do not use baking soda as a facial scrub. Its alkaline nature can interfere with the skin’s normal acidic environment and may be particularly irritating to sensitive or mature skin.
Step 2: Use a Brightening Ingredient
After cleansing, apply a product containing a proven brightening ingredient.
Good options include:
- Niacinamide
- Vitamin C
- Azelaic acid
- Retinoids, when appropriate for your skin
Start with one active ingredient rather than applying several products at once.
If your skin is sensitive, begin every other day and increase gradually if there is no irritation.
Step 3: Moisturize
Apply a gentle moisturizer after your treatment product.
This helps maintain the skin barrier and can reduce dryness and irritation, particularly when using active ingredients.
Look for ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid if your skin tends to become dry.
Step 4: Never Skip Sunscreen
This is one of the most important steps.
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning, even when you are not spending the entire day outdoors.
Sun exposure can contribute to the development and persistence of pigmentation. Without daily sun protection, treatments for dark spots may be much less effective.
When outdoors for extended periods, reapply sunscreen and consider a hat or other physical protection.
Step 5: Give the Routine Time
