Step 1: The Birthday Nobody Expected
Today, I turned 96.
Ninety-six years.
When I was young, I never imagined what this age would feel like.
I thought growing old meant having a house full of family.
Children running through the garden.
Grandchildren knocking on the door.
A wife sitting beside me at the kitchen table.
Someone would always be there to say:
“Happy birthday.”
But life doesn’t always follow the story we imagine for ourselves.
Today, there was no wife beside me.
No children came through the door.
No grandchildren gathered around a table.
So I did something very simple.
I baked myself a cake.
Step 2: The Kitchen Was Quiet
I woke up early.
The house was quiet.
At 96, I’ve learned to appreciate quiet mornings.
I made myself a cup of tea and stood by the kitchen window.
Outside, the garden was beginning to wake up.
The same garden I’ve cared for over the years.
The same soil I’ve planted in.
The same trees I’ve watched grow through countless seasons.
Then I remembered what day it was.
My birthday.
I smiled.
“Happy birthday to me,” I whispered.
And I decided I wasn’t going to let the day pass without celebrating.
