The Simple Farmer’s Trick That Helps Keep Strawberries Fresh for Days

  • by

I used to avoid buying strawberries in large quantities, even when they were on sale. They always looked beautiful at the store, but within a few days they would become soft, watery, and covered with mold. Then I learned a simple storage trick that can help strawberries stay fresh much longer.

The secret is white vinegar and water.

Fresh strawberries are delicate and can quickly develop mold because of moisture and microscopic spores on their surfaces. A diluted vinegar rinse can help reduce some of the surface microbes responsible for spoilage. The trick is to use the right concentration and, most importantly, make sure the berries are completely dry before storing them.

Start by checking your strawberries and removing any berries that are already moldy, leaking, or badly damaged. One spoiled strawberry can quickly affect the others in the container.

Prepare a simple solution using 1 part white vinegar and 3 parts water. Place the strawberries in the solution and gently swirl them for about 30 seconds to a minute. There’s no need to scrub them.
