Vinegar is one of the simplest and most affordable household cleaning products, but using too much of it or applying it incorrectly can leave behind streaks instead of the sparkling finish you want. With the right technique, white vinegar can help remove fingerprints, light grease, mineral deposits, and everyday grime from many household surfaces.
For windows and glass, the key is dilution. Mix equal parts white distilled vinegar and water in a clean spray bottle. For particularly dirty windows, you can slightly increase the vinegar concentration, but stronger isn’t always better. Too much solution can make wiping more difficult and may leave residue behind.
Before cleaning, remove loose dust and dirt with a dry microfiber cloth. This simple step prevents dirt from being dragged across the glass and helps reduce streaks.
Lightly spray the vinegar solution onto the microfiber cloth rather than completely soaking the window. You can also mist the glass lightly, but avoid excessive spraying, especially around wooden frames, painted surfaces, electrical components, or areas where liquid could seep into seals.
Wipe the window from top to bottom using overlapping strokes. A clean microfiber cloth is ideal because it absorbs moisture without leaving behind the lint that paper towels sometimes produce.
The drying step is just as important as the cleaning step. Use a second, completely dry microfiber cloth to buff the glass until it looks clear and streak-free. If you’re cleaning a large window, work in small sections so the solution doesn’t dry before you have a chance to wipe it.
