Every day he not only beat me but also poured boiling water on me, roaring, “I’ll boil your belly until a son comes out!”

Part 2 — The Truth Finally Comes Out

The phone rang twice before someone answered.

“Hello?”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“Sophie?”

There was silence on the other end.

Then her sister’s voice broke.

“Caroline?”

“Yes.”

“Oh my God. Where are you?”

“I’m in the hospital.”

Luke stepped forward.

“Give me that phone.”

The nurse moved between them.

“No.”

Luke stared at her.

“You don’t understand. She’s confused.”

The nurse didn’t move.

“She is awake, oriented, and has clearly told us she does not want you touching her.”

For the first time, Luke looked frightened.

Sophie was still speaking through the phone.

“Caroline, what happened?”

Caroline looked at Luke.

He was standing near the door, watching her.

She knew that look.

It was the look he gave her whenever he wanted her to remember what happened after she disobeyed him.

But something had changed.

There were people in the room now.

People who could hear her.

People who could see the burns.

People who could read the medical reports.

Caroline took a breath.

“He hurt me.”

Luke immediately shouted, “She’s lying!”

The doctor turned toward him.

“Mr. Carter, you need to leave the room.”

“This is my wife!”

“And she has just accused you of assaulting her.”

Luke’s face hardened.

“You’re going to believe her?”

The doctor looked at the burns.

Then at the medical photographs.

Then at Caroline.

“Yes.”

Security arrived minutes later.

Luke tried to argue.

He said he was her husband.

He said he had the right to stay.

The security officer calmly answered:

“Not when the patient has asked you to leave.”

Luke walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked at Caroline.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Caroline’s body trembled.

But she didn’t look away.

“No,” she whispered.

“I regret staying silent.”

The door closed behind him.

Caroline finally breathed.

Sophie stayed on the phone until a nurse brought her to the hospital.

When she entered the room, Caroline began crying.

“I thought you stopped caring.”

Sophie rushed to her bedside.

“I never stopped.”

“He changed my number.”

“I called for months.”

“He told me you didn’t want me anymore.”

Sophie took her hand carefully.

“He lied.”

Caroline stared at her sister.

“How long have you known something was wrong?”

“I knew something was wrong. I just didn’t know how bad it was.”

Caroline closed her eyes.

“I lost the babies.”

Sophie looked at the doctor.

“What babies?”

The doctor hesitated.

Then she explained what the medical examination had revealed.

The previous pregnancies.

The evidence of repeated trauma.

The injuries Caroline had suffered.

Sophie covered her mouth.

“Oh, Caroline.”

Caroline began sobbing.

“I thought my body was broken.”

The doctor shook her head.

“It wasn’t.”

That sentence stayed with Caroline.

For years, Luke had told her she was incapable of carrying a child.

He had made every loss her fault.

He had convinced her that her body was defective.

But the medical evidence told another story.

She had been pregnant.

Again and again.

And each time, the pregnancies had ended after violent incidents.

The doctor quietly told Caroline that the hospital would document everything and contact the appropriate authorities.

Caroline nodded.

Then she asked the question that frightened her most.

“What happens now?”

Sophie squeezed her hand.

“Now you don’t face him alone.”

For the first time in years, Caroline believed her.
